Why teams look for a ProfitWell alternative
Start with the decision your current setup leaves unresolved. You might want paid support and a named owner on the vendor side. You might need warehouse or CRM sync, want recovery tools alongside reporting, or already have the metrics and need to know what to change. These are buying situations, not evidence that ProfitWell performs poorly.
ProfitWell Metrics is owned by Paddle, which acquired ProfitWell in 2022. Its free reporting covers MRR, churn, upgrades and downgrades, LTV, cohort and plan segmentation, and benchmarks. Staying is reasonable if those views answer your questions. A paid subscription needs to justify its cost through work you actually need.
Separate three purchases before comparing ProfitWell competitors. Metrics describe revenue. Dunning addresses payment recovery. Pricing work helps decide what to charge. Paddle's Retain is a separate paid product, and Price Intelligently is now owned by SBI Growth. Neither should be treated as part of free Metrics.
Quick comparison of ProfitWell alternatives
Prices below are listed at the time of writing. Annual billing prices are monthly equivalents. Included Stripe reports do not mean Stripe Billing itself is free.
| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Free tier | What it does not do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ProfitWell Metrics | Core subscription metrics and benchmarks | Completely free | Core Metrics product | Does not include paid Retain |
| ChartMogul | Deeper reporting | Starter from 69 USD monthly or 57 billed yearly | Up to 10,000 USD MRR | Starting price does not cover every revenue band |
| Baremetrics | Metrics plus optional recovery | Launch from 75 USD monthly | Not specified here | Base price does not include recovery or cancellation add-ons |
| GrowPanel | Low-cost metrics | 49 USD a month billed yearly | Up to 200,000 USD ARR | Does not list monthly prices |
| Stripe Billing analytics | Basic MRR and churn reporting | Basic reports included in Billing | Included reports, not a separate free Billing plan | Basic reports do not choose a pricing change for you |
| Monetisation | Pricing decisions and measuring changes | 99 USD monthly or 49 billed yearly | No free plan, one-time sample audit without a card | Does not replace warehouse sync, benchmarks or dunning |
Choose a tool around the work you need done
ProfitWell Metrics remains a reasonable choice
Paddle calls ProfitWell Metrics completely free at the time of writing. It connects to Stripe, Chargebee, Braintree, Zuora, Recurly and Paddle. You do not need Paddle Billing. Changing your reporting tool therefore does not follow automatically from preferring a different billing provider.
Its MRR, churn, LTV, segmentation and benchmarks may already cover your recurring review. Keep it if that is enough. If the missing job is dunning or churn reduction, evaluate Retain separately. Its price is not published on the Metrics page, so ask for a quote before comparing total spending with another provider.
ChartMogul suits deeper reporting requirements
Consider ChartMogul when you can name the analysis you want beyond your current reports. If warehouse or CRM sync motivates the move, confirm the required connection and plan before buying. Our comparison of ChartMogul alternatives helps frame that reporting decision.
At the time of writing, ChartMogul is free up to 10,000 USD MRR. Starter begins at 69 USD monthly or 57 billed yearly for up to 3 team members. Pro begins at 119 monthly or 99 billed yearly. Prices rise by revenue band. Enterprise starts at 19,900 USD a year above 10M ARR. Entry prices alone cannot establish your bill at a larger revenue level.
Baremetrics brings optional recovery into the comparison
Baremetrics fits a buying process that considers metrics and recovery together. At the time of writing, Launch starts at 75 USD a month for 0 to 360K ARR. Growth starts at 255 up to 3.6M ARR, and Scale starts at 1,152. Yearly billing offers up to 35 percent off.
Payment Recovery and Cancellation Insights cost an additional 129 USD a month each. Budget for the specific tools you intend to use. The maximum yearly discount does not establish an exact annual quote for each tier or add-on. Read the Baremetrics alternatives comparison if those separate charges drive your choice.
GrowPanel offers a low-cost metrics option
GrowPanel's free tier covers up to 200,000 USD ARR at the time of writing. Its paid plans list 49, 99 and 199 USD a month billed yearly. That makes it worth evaluating when the work is subscription reporting and the budget is a primary constraint.
No monthly prices are listed. Treat the displayed monthly equivalent as an annual commitment when comparing it with monthly subscriptions. The prices compared here do not establish which paid tier applies at each ARR level, so confirm eligibility instead of assigning the cheapest tier to your business.
Stripe Billing analytics can cover the basics
Stripe Billing includes basic revenue reports, including MRR and churn charts, inside the Stripe Dashboard. If those views already answer your questions, another reporting subscription may add little to the workflow.
Test that against the actual review your team performs. Basic reporting can be sufficient, but it does not resolve a question such as which plan needs a price change. Keep a separate requirement list for analysis you cannot complete with the available views.
Monetisation connects pricing opportunities to dollar estimates
Monetisation uses a read-only Stripe key plus your website and analytics. It shows MRR per plan, churn, discounts and yearly share. It then lists pricing and packaging opportunities with low, expected and high dollar estimates and the method behind them. Changes are measured with a holdout or a dated pre and post comparison.
At the time of writing, monthly plans cost 99, 399 and 1,199 USD. Annual billing equivalents are 49, 199 and 599 USD a month. There is no free plan. A one-time sample audit on the homepage needs no card. Compare the Monetisation plans and billing options against the decision work you need.
It does not replace multi-billing-source data modelling, warehouse sync, benchmarks or dunning. Keep the tools that provide those capabilities if you need them. Monetisation can sit alongside ProfitWell when free reporting remains useful.
What reporting costs at your stage
This table uses prices available at the time of writing. For ChartMogul's free threshold, ARR is treated as annualized MRR. An entry price is not a quote for a specific revenue band.
| Tool | 100K ARR | 500K ARR | 2M ARR |
|---|---|---|---|
| ProfitWell Metrics | Free core Metrics | Free core Metrics | Free core Metrics |
| ChartMogul | Free within 10,000 USD MRR | Price at this band not published | Price at this band not published |
| Baremetrics | Launch from 75 USD monthly | Growth from 255 USD monthly | Growth from 255 USD monthly |
| GrowPanel | Free within 200,000 USD ARR | Applicable tier price not published | Applicable tier price not published |
| Stripe Billing analytics | Basic reports included | Basic reports included | Basic reports included |
| Monetisation | Starter 99 USD monthly or 49 USD billed yearly | Starter 99 USD monthly or 49 USD billed yearly | Starter 99 USD monthly or 49 USD billed yearly |
Yearly figures turn into a single upfront commitment. ChartMogul Starter at 57 USD a month billed yearly is 684 USD a year, and Pro at 99 is 1,188. GrowPanel's paid plans come to 588, 1,188 and 2,388 USD a year. Monetisation billed yearly is 588, 2,388 or 7,188 USD a year for Starter, Growth and Scale. Compare those totals with what the monthly plans would cost over the same twelve months before you commit.
Do you need a metrics tool or a pricing decision tool
Write down the question that starts your next revenue meeting. If it is about MRR movement, churn or plan segments, a metrics product may cover the work. If it is about changing a price, plan or discount, another dashboard can leave the decision unfinished.
A SaaS pricing audit can establish the opportunity to investigate. Then software for pricing experimentation can help you assess how to measure the change. Agree on the outcome and comparison method before treating a revenue movement as evidence of success.
Consulting is another purchase. Paddle sold Price Intelligently to SBI Growth, announced in November 2024. Its work is quoted per engagement at the time of writing. The Price Intelligently alternative guide explains that decision separately from replacing free metrics.
How to switch without losing history
Export the history and reports you need before removing access to the existing tool. Save report settings and definitions alongside the export. Check which historical records the replacement can import, and preserve anything it cannot reproduce.
Run both systems for an overlap period that includes a billing cycle. Reconcile MRR on matching dates with the same customer scope. Check how each definition treats discounts, upgrades, downgrades, cancellations and annual subscriptions. Investigate differences before deciding that either total is wrong.
Teams keeping revenue data in a warehouse can also ask your billing tables questions in plain English instead of writing SQL. Keep the same metric definitions there so a new query interface does not create another unexplained total.
Finish the move when the required history is preserved and the reports support your workflow. Keep recovery running if it is a separate product. If the real gap was pricing decisions, retaining free ProfitWell Metrics alongside a decision tool may be the simpler outcome.
Questions
What is the best alternative to ProfitWell?
The best alternative depends on the job you need done. ChartMogul suits deeper reporting, Baremetrics pairs metrics with separately priced recovery tools, GrowPanel offers low-cost metrics, and Stripe Billing includes basic reports. Monetisation fits teams deciding which price, plan or discount to change and measuring the dollar impact.
Is ProfitWell still free?
Yes, Paddle calls ProfitWell Metrics completely free at the time of writing. You do not need Paddle Billing to use it, and it connects to several billing providers. Retain is a separate paid Paddle product for dunning and churn reduction. Its price is not published on the Metrics page.
Who owns ProfitWell?
Paddle owns ProfitWell Metrics after acquiring ProfitWell in 2022. That ownership does not mean you must use Paddle Billing, since Metrics connects to Stripe, Chargebee, Braintree, Zuora, Recurly and Paddle. The pricing consultancy Price Intelligently has a different owner following its sale to SBI Growth, announced in November 2024.
What happened to Price Intelligently?
Paddle sold Price Intelligently to SBI Growth, with the sale announced in November 2024. The pricing consultancy had come with Paddle's acquisition of ProfitWell in 2022. Its work is quoted per engagement at the time of writing. Treat that consulting purchase separately from free ProfitWell Metrics and paid retention software.
Can I use Monetisation instead of ProfitWell?
Yes, if its Stripe revenue views cover your reporting needs and you want help choosing pricing changes. Monetisation shows MRR per plan, churn, discounts and yearly share, estimates opportunities in dollars, and measures changes. It does not replace multi-billing-source data modelling, warehouse sync, benchmarks or dunning, so preserve those capabilities where needed.
