Pricing optimization software for SaaS and the best price optimization tools compared

The best pricing optimization software for a SaaS company depends on the job. To find which prices and plans to change and prove the result, use an analysis and testing tool like Monetisation. To ship new plans and credits without code, use entitlement infrastructure like Stigg or Schematic. Usage billing belongs in Metronome or Orb, metrics in ProfitWell or ChartMogul, and enterprise CPQ pricing in Pricefx or PROS.

The short answer

"Pricing optimization software" covers at least five kinds of product, and most comparison lists mix them up. A billing platform, a metrics dashboard and an enterprise CPQ suite all claim to optimize pricing, but they do very different jobs.

Here is the quick way to choose:

  • You want to know which prices, plans and discounts to change, in dollars, and prove the result. Pick an analysis and testing tool. That is what Monetisation does.
  • You already know the new packaging and need to ship plans, credits and limits without engineering time. Pick entitlement infrastructure such as Stigg or Schematic.
  • You bill on usage and need metering and invoicing. Pick Metronome or Orb.
  • You want clean MRR, churn and LTV numbers. Pick ProfitWell Metrics, ChartMogul or Baremetrics.
  • You are an enterprise with thousands of SKUs, price lists and sales-negotiated deals. Pick Pricefx or PROS.

Most SaaS companies under 2M USD ARR need the first category and maybe the fourth. The others solve real problems, just not the "are we charging the right amount" problem.

Opportunities, ranked by expected value Example
Packaging Add a usage add-on to the top plan One account in five on the top plan exceeds its included usage every month.
Estimate, per month +$2,300 $1,100 to $3,800
Method: Usage above allowance on the top plan, times an add-on price, minus expected throttling.
Example card with illustrative figures. Your audit computes them from your own data, as estimates, not a guarantee of results.

Prices change, so check each vendor's own page before you buy. Where a vendor does not publish prices, we say so rather than guess.

Analysis and testing tools answer "what should we charge"

This is the category most founders mean when they type "pricing optimization software". You want someone, or something, to look at your numbers and tell you that the Team plan is underpriced, that a third of yearly deals carry an expired coupon, or that heavy users have nowhere to upgrade to.

Monetisation does that from data you already have. It reads Stripe through a restricted read-only key, your website and pricing page, and optionally Google Analytics 4, Search Console, HubSpot or Salesforce and a product usage export. It then checks the business against more than 40 opportunity types and lists each one with a low, expected and high monthly estimate in dollars, a confidence level and the method in one sentence. You can see how those figures are built on the estimates method page.

The second half matters as much as the first. A recommendation is only useful if you can measure it. Monetisation runs pricing page and paywall variants on new visitors with a holdout through a small script, or measures a billing change you make against the baseline trend. Every test ends as a win, flat, loss or not enough data. Our guide to pricing page A/B testing tools goes deeper on how those tests compare with general testing suites.

What this category does not do: it does not run your billing, and it does not run willingness to pay surveys. If you need survey research for a product with no pricing history, a consultancy is still the better choice, and our comparison with pricing consultants covers when.

Entitlement infrastructure ships the plans you decided on

Stigg and Schematic solve a different and very real pain. In many SaaS codebases, plan limits are hard-coded. Adding a new tier, a credit allowance or a grandfathered plan becomes an engineering project, so pricing changes happen once a year at best.

These tools move plans, features and limits into a separate service that your product checks at runtime. Product and finance can then change packaging without a deploy.

Stigg publishes its prices: a free Build plan, Pro at 399 USD a month billed yearly (499 USD monthly), Scale from 50,000 USD a year and a bring-your-own-cloud option from 150,000 USD a year. Schematic sells through a demo and pairs closely with Stripe.

They are the right buy when you know what to change and cannot ship it fast enough. They do not tell you what the new prices should be. Plenty of teams use both kinds of tool: one to decide and measure, one to ship.

Usage billing platforms charge for what customers use

If you price per API call, per seat-hour, per token or per credit, you need metering and invoicing that can rate millions of events. Metronome and Orb are the two names that come up most for SaaS and AI companies. Both are sales-led and neither publishes a price list.

They include pricing features, such as simulating how a new rate card would have billed last month's usage. That is useful for a planned change. It still assumes you know which change to simulate.

If you are pricing AI features, the cost side matters as much as the price. Before you set a credit price, it helps to track what each customer costs you in cloud and AI spend, so a heavy user on a flat plan does not quietly erase your margin.

Metrics tools show the scoreboard

ProfitWell Metrics, now part of Paddle, gives subscription businesses MRR, churn, LTV and cohort reporting at no charge for the core product, with paid add-ons such as Retain for failed payment recovery. ChartMogul and Baremetrics offer deeper analytics on tiered plans.

Every SaaS company should have one of these. None of them is pricing optimization software in the sense of telling you what to change. They show the scoreboard, and you still have to work out the play. If you used ProfitWell for metrics and Price Intelligently for pricing, our page on the Price Intelligently alternative explains what happened to that service and what replaces it.

Enterprise pricing suites are for large catalogs and negotiated deals

Pricefx and PROS appear on every "price optimization software" list, and they are serious products. They manage price lists across thousands of products, guide sales reps on discounts in each deal and model price elasticity across regions.

They are also priced for that scale. Pricefx says its subscriptions range from 100,000 USD to 3.5 million USD a year, based on the revenue it manages, and that implementation projects start at 100,000 USD. PROS sells on enterprise contracts without a public list. For a SaaS company with three plans and a self-serve checkout, this is the wrong category however good the software is.

How to choose pricing optimization software for your SaaS

Ask these five questions before booking any demos:

  1. What decision am I stuck on? "What should we charge" points to analysis and testing. "We cannot ship plan changes" points to entitlements. "Our invoices are wrong" points to billing.
  2. Does it read my real billing data? Recommendations built on surveys or industry averages are weaker than ones built on what your own customers pay and choose.
  3. Does it show the method behind each number? A dollar estimate you cannot check is a sales pitch. Look for ranges, confidence and a plain explanation.
  4. Can it measure the change? Without a holdout or a baseline, you will never know whether a price increase worked or the market simply moved.
  5. Is the price proportionate? A tool that costs more per year than the change could plausibly earn is not optimization.

It also helps to know when competitors move. A rival cutting their Team plan changes your comparison set overnight, which is why Growth and Scale plans in Monetisation include a competitor price tracker for SaaS that checks pricing pages daily and alerts you to changes.

Where to start

If you are a SaaS team that wants a concrete list of what to change, start with a one-time sample audit from the form at the top of this article. It reads your public site and pricing page and shows the kind of opportunities a full audit finds. The full product connects Stripe read-only and is explained on the pricing optimization software page, with plans at 49, 199 and 599 USD a month billed yearly.

Questions

What is the best pricing optimization software for SaaS?

For a SaaS company between roughly 20k and 2M USD ARR that wants to know what to change and whether it worked, the best fit is a tool that reads billing data and runs tests, such as Monetisation. Larger companies rebuilding their packaging often add entitlement infrastructure like Stigg or Schematic, and enterprises with complex B2B deals look at Pricefx or PROS.

How much does pricing optimization software cost?

Prices run from free to seven figures. ProfitWell Metrics is free, Stigg's Pro plan is 399 USD a month billed yearly, Monetisation runs 49 to 599 USD a month billed yearly, and Pricefx says its subscriptions range from 100,000 USD to 3.5 million USD a year based on revenue under management.

Do small SaaS companies need pricing software?

Once you have a few hundred paying customers and more than one plan, yes, because small pricing changes then move real money and guessing gets expensive. Before that point, talking to customers and watching plan choice in your billing dashboard is usually enough.

What is the difference between pricing software and billing software?

Billing software charges customers: invoices, subscriptions, proration, tax and dunning. Pricing software decides what to charge: it analyses plan mix, discounts, usage and willingness to pay, recommends changes and measures them. Many SaaS companies run both, with the pricing tool reading from the billing system.

Can AI set my SaaS prices automatically?

Not safely for list prices. Dynamic pricing that changes by the hour works in retail and travel, but SaaS customers compare notes and expect stable prices. AI is useful for finding underpriced plans, discount leakage and usage gaps, then a human approves a change and a test measures it.
