Monetisation

SaaS tiered pricing optimization software that shows what each plan earns and what to change

SaaS tiered pricing optimization means checking whether each tier earns what it should: the price gaps, the plan most buyers pick, and where upgrades stall. Monetisation reads your pricing page and, once connected, Stripe through a read-only key. It shows revenue and churn per plan, flags the tier with the biggest gap, estimates a change as a low, expected and high dollar range, and measures the result after you apply it.

Who needs tiered pricing optimization software

A SaaS founder, head of growth or finance lead running a Free, Team and Business ladder usually knows the prices but not the shape of the revenue behind them. The common situations are easy to spot.

  • One tier holds most accounts and the next one up barely moves.
  • The Team plan has not changed since launch while usage per account keeps growing.
  • A single tier carries most of your coupons and discounts.
  • The yearly option exists, but few buyers pick it.

Each one is a pricing decision worth dollars. Doing the analysis by hand means a spreadsheet export from billing, a pivot per plan and a guess about churn. A SaaS pricing audit does the first pass for you, and this page covers the tier-specific part.

Opportunities, ranked by expected value Example
Pricing Increase Team plan price 12 percent 400 accounts sit on Team at $49 and the price has not moved since launch.
Estimate, per month +$1,470 $550 to $2,260
Method: Plan revenue times a 6 to 15 percent increase, minus 3 to 4 percent assumed extra churn at the new price.

What Monetisation checks on each tier

Tier signal What is measured Example change it can point to
Plan mix Accounts and MRR per plan Raise the entry price of the plan that holds most revenue
Upgrade and downgrade flow Moves between plans over the period Move a limit that blocks upgrades
Discounts by plan Discount value applied per plan Stop a coupon that undercuts the tier above
Billing interval Share of yearly versus monthly payers Offer a yearly option at about two months free
Price age Time since the plan price last moved Test a higher price for new customers
Usage against limits Accounts near or above plan allowances Add an overage price instead of a bigger plan

Every change on the list is estimated as a low, expected and high monthly dollar range, with the assumption written next to it. The estimate methodology shows how each figure is built, so your finance lead can check the arithmetic.

How it works in four steps

  1. Paste your pricing page. Monetisation reads your tiers, prices and limits and builds a first audit with no card.
  2. Connect Stripe read-only. With a restricted key, plan revenue, churn, discounts and the yearly share come from real subscriptions.
  3. Review the ranked tier changes. Each opportunity shows the evidence, the dollar range and the risk. Pick the one with the best expected value.
  4. Apply it, then measure it. You make the change in your billing. Monetisation compares the period after against the baseline trend, or against a holdout for page tests on Growth and Scale.

A tier change worked through

This example is illustrative, not a customer result. Suppose 400 accounts pay 49 USD a month on a Team plan, and the plan has not moved since launch.

Measure Current Team price Team price at 55 USD
Accounts 400 400 minus assumed extra churn
Assumed extra churn none 3 percent, or 12 accounts
Monthly price 49 USD 55 USD
Monthly revenue 19,600 USD 388 times 55 USD, or 21,340 USD

The change adds 1,740 USD a month after the assumed loss, about 21,000 USD a year. If extra churn is 10 percent instead, revenue is 360 times 55 USD, or 19,800 USD, a gain of only 200 USD. That is why Monetisation shows a range and tests on new customers first, as the SaaS price increase page explains for existing subscribers.

Test a tier price before you commit

Growth and Scale plans include a JavaScript snippet with server-side assignment and a holdout. It shows a price or plan layout variant to part of your visitors and reports revenue per visitor against Stripe revenue. For the method and its limits, read about pricing experimentation software. Starter plans cover changes you apply yourself and measure against the baseline.

Experiment result, 28 days, holdout control Example
Team plan at $55 for new customers Primary metric: Revenue per visitor Win Existing customers keep their price until the notice ends.
+7.4% Interval +1.8% to +12.9% -20%0+20%
Example verdict with illustrative figures. Every test reports lift with an interval and a plain verdict.

How this differs from other options

Option Best for Where it falls short for tier decisions
Spreadsheet from a billing export A one-off look at plan counts Manual, no dollar ranking, no measurement after the change
Subscription metrics dashboards Reporting MRR, churn and cohorts Show the numbers but do not rank what to change
Pricing consultants Buyer research and positioning Quoted per project, so a recurring check is costly
Monetisation Ranked tier changes with dollar estimates and measurement Stripe-first, and billing changes stay in your hands

Compare the consulting versus software tradeoff if you are weighing a project quote.

Choose a plan

Plan Monthly billing A month billed yearly Best for
Starter 99 USD 49 USD Analysis, playbooks and billing changes you apply
Growth 399 USD 199 USD Pricing page tests with a holdout
Scale 1,199 USD 599 USD Larger experiment volume, API and webhooks

Questions

How do you optimize SaaS tiered pricing?

Start from revenue per tier: how many accounts sit on each plan, what they pay, and how many upgrade or churn. Then change one thing at a time, such as a price gap or a limit, and measure revenue per visitor. Monetisation ranks the tier changes by estimated dollars and tracks the outcome.

How many pricing tiers should a SaaS have?

Most SaaS products sell three or four tiers, but the right number depends on how distinct your buyer segments are. Too many tiers slow the decision, too few leave money on the table. Compare plan mix and upgrade rates in your own billing data before adding or removing a tier.

What is a good price gap between SaaS tiers?

There is no universal ratio. The gap should be smaller than the value the next tier adds for the buyer who needs it. If almost no one upgrades, the gap or the limit may be wrong. Monetisation shows upgrade and downgrade counts per plan so you can judge the gap from your own data.

How do I know if my SaaS tiers are priced wrong?

Warning signs are one tier holding most accounts, few upgrades, a price that has not moved since launch, and heavy discounting on a single plan. Each shows up in billing data. A pricing audit in Monetisation lists these signals and puts an estimated dollar value on each.

Can I test a new tier price before changing it for everyone?

Yes. Growth and Scale plans include a snippet that shows a pricing page variant to a share of visitors with a holdout, and measures revenue per visitor. Starter covers billing changes you apply yourself, compared against the baseline trend. Monetisation never changes your Stripe prices.
